Vintage 1940s Norseland by Coro sterling silver bird and berries brooch

A beautiful 1940s figural bird and berries brooch from Norseland, a registered trademark of CoroCraft. During WWII, not only did 70% of Coro's jewelry plants convert to military production, but those facilities continuing to produce jewelry were forced to switch from gold plate and rhodium to sterling silver. In "American Costume Jewelry: Art & Industry, 1935-1950,"(pg. 88) this conversion is described:

"On 1st July 1942, the company presented with much fanfare its first sterling silver collection, declaring itself to be the first company to accept the challenge of using non-priority metals in order to conform to Government rules. Therefore, the first line made entirely of sterling silver dates back to the fall of 1942, although a few cheap sterling lines with flower and animal subjects had already been produced back in Spring, possibly to test the reactions of the public. Among these test items there are a few notable examples of brooches in which designs of birds and flowers are set in oval, round and square frames. This type of design was called Scandinavian style. This, together with the Scandinavian source of the silver, accounts for the "Sterling Genuine Norseland" trademark used for making, which featured a typical Viking ship in the center."

This brooch is a spectacular example of American war-time jewelry.
