Antique 14K 1920s seven-band gimmel fede ring with engraved details
This style of ring is called a gimmel ring because of the interlocking "twin" (from "gemellus" in Latin) parts. These rings can further be identified as "fede" rings when clasped hands are present in the design. Clasped hands are an ancient symbol of good faith and trust and this style of ring has a rich, long history. Beautiful examples of gimmel rings from the 1500s-1800s can be found in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, for example. Gimmel and fede rings were used to contract marriages as early as the 16th century (Renaissance) in Europe. The symbolism of interlocking hands is powerful and enduring.
