Antique Georgian 10K gold vinaigrette objects de vertu with petrified wood cover

A stunning 10K gold Georgian vinaigrette with a perforated grill and a polished petrified wood lid. This thoughtful, perfect little object was gifted to a loved one on the occasion of Christmas, 1817. This was near the end of the Regency Era in England, which officially lasted 1811-1820 when George, Prince of Wales, served as prince regent during the last years of his father's monarchy. Vinaigrette's were functional objects made to hold a bit of fabric soaked in a pleasing perfume or combination of fragrant herbs and oils. The compartment held the fabric under a hinged, pierced grill and the scent wafted through the perforated lid. Georgian city dwellers of means would keep their vinaigrette in a pocket, on a chatelaine, or somewhere else close at hand and bring it to their nose to mask the wide variety of offensive smells out in public. This piece is marvelous, with a pretty grill, a polished top, and a personalized engraving.

Shipping

Domestic: In-stock items ship within three days of purchase (usually within two!) via USPS. Our default is USPS Priority Mail unless your purchase is over $1,000, in which case we require USPS Express Mail + signature confirmation. Insurance is included with all domestic purchases.

International: Default shipping is via USPS First Class International Mail unless the value of the parcel is $400 or more, in which case we default to USPS Priority Mail International shipping. Please allow 3–4 weeks for delivery. Insurance for international orders is available upon request and for an added fee.
