Vintage 1970s Kewa Santo Domingo Peublo four-strand bead necklace with jaclas
A rare Kewa (Santo Domingo) Pueblo beadwork necklace with Cowrie shell heishi beads, jasper, coral and turquoise nuggets. The Kewa Pueblo is located between Santa Fe and Albuquerque and has been one of the largest Pueblo communities in New Mexico for over 400 years. This style of beadwork predates the silversmith and lapidary crafts of the Navajo by many generations and is believed to be the oldest form of jewelry in New Mexico.
It is difficult to express how special these old Santo Domingo necklaces are. This one is remarkable, with a four strands of heishi shell beads descending to sections of turquoise nugget (likely Kingman) and coral. A gorgeous plug of jasper separates the strands from the jaclas below. Jaclas are two loops of beads, strung separately and originally worn as earrings. Jaclas are also a sometimes tied together and used as the terminating elements of necklaces. They appear as tassels from a distance, but they are distinct loops. Outstanding condition from the estate of a collector. Silver cap and hook closure.

International: Default shipping is via USPS First Class International Mail unless the value of the parcel is $400 or more, in which case we default to USPS Priority Mail International shipping. Please allow 3–4 weeks for delivery. Insurance for international orders is available upon request and for an added fee.
