Antique 1890s Victorian silver engraved vesta or match case necklace ✶ SALE ✶

A late 19th century Continental Silver vesta or match case, beautifully hand engraved on both body and lid. A vesta case was used in Victorian and Edwardian England to carry a day's-worth of smoking matches. The matches for smoking were shorter than the matches used domestically (lighting stoves, candles, etc.) and would have fit nicely in a little case like this! The detailed engraving on this case transforms it from a functional, every day personal effect to a little "objet d'art." Flowers in full bloom, bluebirds, and even butterflies inhabit the engraved scenes on both sides of this case. One side is engraved "1893" and the other "LC." This was likely a gift from a wife to a husband and personalized as such. The lid hinges open to a roomy compartment. Still perfect today for wearing as a pendant or carrying a little bit of whatever you might need (including matches)!

Shipping

Domestic: In-stock items ship within three days of purchase (usually within two!) via USPS. Our default is USPS Priority Mail unless your purchase is over $1,000, in which case we require USPS Express Mail + signature confirmation. Insurance is included with all domestic purchases.

International: Default shipping is via USPS First Class International Mail unless the value of the parcel is $400 or more, in which case we default to USPS Priority Mail International shipping. Please allow 3–4 weeks for delivery. Insurance for international orders is available upon request and for an added fee.
