Antique Victorian 1900s sterling vinaigrette objects de vertu with book chain
A darling silver and gilt vinaigrette with a perforated grill and hand engraved exterior. Vinaigrette's were functional objects made to hold a bit of fabric soaked in a pleasing perfume or combination of fragrant herbs and oils. The compartment held the fabric under a hinged, pierced grill and the scent wafted through the perforated lid. Georgian city dwellers of means would keep their vinaigrette in a pocket, on a chatelaine, or somewhere else close at hand and bring it to their nose to mask the wide variety of offensive smells out in public. It is possible that this is an earlier piece (Georgian) with later hallmarks. Gorgeous engraving. I've added an early 20th century brass book chain.

Domestic: In-stock items ship within three days of purchase (usually within two!) via USPS. Our default is USPS Priority Mail unless your purchase is over $1,000, in which case we require USPS Express Mail + signature confirmation. Insurance is included with all domestic purchases.
International: Default shipping is via USPS First Class International Mail unless the value of the parcel is $400 or more, in which case we default to USPS Priority Mail International shipping. Please allow 3–4 weeks for delivery. Insurance for international orders is available upon request and for an added fee.
