Antique 1930s Egyptian Revival brooch with faux faience scarab and
A large Egyptian Revival brooch centering a faux faience scarab in a tiered, cast, and embellished square mounting. Ancient Egyptian faience was a bright blue ceramic material, produced in many colors but perhaps best known in its turquoise-blue version. The scarab on this brooch is molded glass with painted yellow accents, held in a fitted oval bezel. The surrounding frame of metal has a marvelous ruched appearance and the larger, outer frame is cast with acanthus and other decorative motifs. The four corners are accented with floral elements and faux-pearls.
After the discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb by Howard Carter in 1922, public appetite for Ancient Egyptian cultural symbols - including in costume and jewelry - was insatiable. Archaeological discoveries, as well as the building of the Suez Canal and (a generation earlier) Napoleon's campaigns in Egypt, encouraged a literacy in Ancient Egyptian culture among Europeans and Americans that continued into the 1970s.

International: Default shipping is via USPS First Class International Mail unless the value of the parcel is $400 or more, in which case we default to USPS Priority Mail International shipping. Please allow 3–4 weeks for delivery. Insurance for international orders is available upon request and for an added fee.
