Antique 1920s .50 carat fancy brown Old European Cut diamond engagement ring

A fancy brown Old European Cut diamond tucked in an early 20th century mounting. The solitaire-style setting is clearly marked for Ostby & Barton, a firm that specialized in rings beginning in 1904. This design has flow-y orange blossoms etched on each shoulder and a classic six-prong head. The diamond is the color of sweet vermouth - a syrup-y, cinnnamon-brown - and post-dates the mounting by a generation or so. Lively brilliance and rich coloration define this diamond! A gorgeous, all-natural alternative choice for an engagement ring.

Note: At the height of their powers (1910s-1930s) Ostby & Barton was the largest jewelry manufacturer in the country and the largest ring manufacturer in the world. Their Art Deco rings have long been favorites of mine, both costume and fine. Tragically, one of the founders - Englehart C. Ostby - died in the sinking of The Titanic in 1912. His daughter, also a passenger, survived. A macabre connection no doubt, but one that deepens the historical significance of the brand and tugs at the heart!
