Antique 1790s 14K Georgian mourning ring with hair work and golden letters
An incredible Georgian hair work ring engraved for Sarah Basles. This ring would have been worn by a close friend or family member after Sarah's death as a remembrance of her life. The gold letters under the crystal are probably for a relative, "H.B." Sarah's palette-worked hair is in a basketweave under a round frame. I was able to find several records possibly belonging to her in English parish and census records, although nothing conclusive. In a time before photography, hairwork rings like this were treasured as lasting tokens of life and love! Sarah's style of mourning ring is typical of the late 1700s, with a clean, minimal design. A beautiful round of hairwork is set under rock crystal as the ring face. Wonderful, gently curved face and flat "lip" trim. Broad shoulders taper quickly to a thin shank. Engraved on the verso with "Sarah Basles, Obt 6 Feb. 1795 Aet 54," which means that she died at the age of 54 on February 6th, 1795. All sentiments aside, this ring is objectively gorgeous and thoroughly wearable. It would be an amazing addition to a Georgian jewelry collection!

International: Default shipping is via USPS First Class International Mail unless the value of the parcel is $400 or more, in which case we default to USPS Priority Mail International shipping.
