Antique 1910s garnet carbuncle tortoise brooch with rose cut diamonds

A fantastic little creature! This early 20th century pin is shaped as a tortoise with a garnet shell trimmed in rose cut diamonds and articulated, diamond-studded legs, tail, and head. The almandine garnet is cut as a carbuncle and foil-backed for an extra fiery glow. All of the thirty rose cut diamonds are present and original to this fellow, each one tucked in a fitted recess and left with open backs. His engraved underbelly is 9 carat gold. Pin and safety catch closure. Excellent condition. Watch him move!

Measurement: 1 3/8" tip to tail, 19mm wide, 9.9 grams
