Vintage mid-century Margo de Taxco enamel tassel brooch

A rare tassel brooch from celebrated Mexican jewelry designer Margot de Taxco. This design appears in the register of her work as "Tassel" #5774, but this particular piece is marked #5789 - perhaps for the blossom component that suspends the tassel. A circular enamel floral motif brooch with a center loop suspends an enamel tassel. The colors are periwinkle blue and eggshell white. This piece was sometimes sold as an attachment to a necklace, and earrings were also available. It made for a marvelous suite of jewelry! Likely produced in the 1960s at her workshop in Taxco.

Margot designed and made jewelry for years before beginning to experiment and eventually perfect the use of champlevé enamel in sterling. Her enamel work eventually came to define her impressive oeuvre, which spanned decades. Margot van Voorhies Carr - or Margot de Taxco as she branded her business - is regarded as one of the most influential Mexican silver artists of the 20th century. Her work incorporates a wide variety of motifs, ranging from Pre-Columbian figural designs to Art Deco Egyptian Revival patterns.

Note: De Taxco's original drawing/sketch for this design, as well as a suite of jewelry, is highlighted in "Margot Van Voorhies, the Art of Mexican Enamel Work" by Penny Morrill.
