Antique Georgian 14K acorn motif Poissarde Earrings

A pair of Poissarde style earrings from the early 19th century, Georgian period. The earrings have the sinuous form and light weight characteristic of this style. They are 14K yellow gold and have a marvelous "mighty oak" motif with leaves and acorn nicely modeled and positioned to face forward/out when worn. The "S" curve through the center of the hoop is what we love best about this style, as well as the little loops atop the earrings. These loops originally functioned as wig fasteners, allowing the wearer to secure the earrings not only through the ear but also to her hair/wig. When worn today, they serve to keep the earrings "upright" and positioned in the ear. The earrings are thread through the ear back-to-front, hinging open to allow for easy fastening. A delicate but wearable pair of Georgian history! Unmarked but attributed to France.

Note: This style of earrings is much sought after and quite rare to find. Many Georgian/Victorian women would have only owned one or two pairs of earrings and they were - apparently - often buried in that single, beloved pair.

Condition: The acorn motif is hollow gold and the leaves are slightly worn at the outer-most tips.
