Antique Victorian 1880s Florentine Pietra Dura hardstone floral pendant with locket compartment
A Victorian Italian Pietra Dura pendant with an Etruscan Revival frame and a photo compartment verso. This piece dates to the late 1800s and was probably made in Florence, where artists were best known for producing this elaborate, exacting form of inlaid jewelry. The design of this brooch is seamless: only with magnification can you see where the different pieces of the hardstone "puzzle" fit together to form the floral scene. The colorful inlay against the black background produces an incredible effect. Here we have shell or alabaster (petals) and two colors of agate (green leaves + yellow blossom) against black polished stone. The frame is highly decorative but not gaudy, done in Etruscan Revival style. Flipping the piece over reveals a deep, tidy compartment - perfect for keeping a photograph or memento. This could be worn with either side facing out. Shown here on a gold fill rope chain. Excellent condition.

Domestic: In-stock items ship within three days of purchase (usually within two!) via USPS. Our default is USPS Priority Mail unless your purchase is over $1,000, in which case we require USPS Express Mail + signature confirmation. Insurance is included with all domestic purchases.
International: Default shipping is via USPS First Class International Mail unless the value of the parcel is $400 or more, in which case we default to USPS Priority Mail International shipping. Please allow 3–4 weeks for delivery. Insurance for international orders is available upon request and for an added fee.
