Antique 1810s 14K Georgian Regency Era amethyst and split pearl ring

A Georgian mourning ring in 14K rose gold with pearl-trimmed amethyst in an elaborate setting. The shank of the ring is grooved or "reeded" with open space between the three bands. The center band is sinuous and decorative while the outer bands create the wide frame of the ring. A ring such as this would have been kept in stock by a local goldsmith, ready to be "fashioned" with a stone of choice and a personal engraving for the family. In this case, a foil backed amethyst cabochon is set at the center surrounded by split pearls. As a second stage or "half-mourning" color, purple symbolized reverence and affection.

This ring may have been made for a more distant family member or acquaintance, as opposed to the same style with a hairwork panel at the center, which would have been reserved for more intimate relationships. This style is was in wide circulation in the early 1900s, when mourning rings were being produced in great volume and the tradition of giving items of jewelry to the family and friends of the deceased was widely practiced. This ring is not engraved with a dedication. Closed back. All pearls original. Evidence of sizing.
