Antique ca. 1800s Georgian 18K Poissarde Earrings with diamond accents

A pair of Poissarde "fishwife" style earrings from the early 19th century, likely French in origin. The earrings have the sinuous form and delicate, clever construction characteristic of this style. This pair is solid gold with hand sawn and milgrain details on the violin-shaped body. Rose cut diamonds stud the top and little leaves swing at the bottom. The "S" curve through the center of the hoop is what we love best about this style, as well as the little loops atop the earrings. These loops originally functioned as wig fasteners, allowing the wearer to secure the earrings not only through the ear but also to her hair/wig! When worn today, they serve to keep the earrings "upright" and well-positioned in the ear. The earrings are thread through the ear back-to-front, hinging open to allow for easy fastening. A delicate but wearable pair of Georgian history.

Note: This style of earrings is much sought after and quite rare to find. Many Georgian/Victorian women would have only owned one or two pairs of earrings and they were - apparently - often buried in that single, beloved pair.
