Antique 1910s Edwardian Marcus & Co. 2.70 carat VS1/G emerald cut diamond and sapphire engagement ring

A 1910s 2.70 carat emerald cut diamond and sapphire engagement ring from Marcus & Co., one of the most highly regarded fine jewelry firms of the early 20th century. Marcus & Co. was founded by Herman Marcus in New York City in 1892. Marcus immigrated from Germany in 1850 after studying with the court jeweler in Dresden and worked for Tiffany and Co. and other luxury firms prior to starting his own company with his sons. Marcus & Co. counted among their clients the Rockefellers and other New York families at the pinnacle of high-society during the Gilded Age, Edwardian and Art Deco Eras. This ring is engraved for the year 1919, a time when the firm was producing some of its finest and most collectible work. 

The ring is platinum filigree set with a stunning 2.70 carat emerald cut diamond, conservatively graded VS1/G. The cut is 8.28 x 6.75 x 5.36mm and presents quite like an Asscher Cut in the setting. And how it sparkles!! The shoulders of the ring are pavé set with thirty-four single cut diamonds - seventeen on each side - contributing an additional .67 CTW. Also set within the shoulders are callibre cut sapphires, segmented into three and following the gentle taper of the mounting. In a stunning show of master craftsmanship, the trapezoidal sapphires actually abut the diamond to the east and west. Openwork galleries and hand engraved details down the shank.
