Antique Victorian 1860s IN MEMORIAM 15 CT gold and pearl ring
An English memorial ring with black enamel "IN MEMORIAM" etched across the band and split pearl accents. The ring is 15 carat gold, which was a legal gold standard in the U.K. between 1854 and 1931. This ring is hallmarked for 1869, which was at the end of a tumultuous decade in both England and the United States. This ring was most likely kept in stock at a Victorian jeweler's shop, waiting for an order from a customer to be finished, signed and hallmarked. The design of the ring is clever, with the black lettered "ribbon" appearing to weave under the round, pearl-set face and down both shoulders. Pairs of pearls seem to secure the ribbon to the band. The band has a foliate pattern, mostly worn, but still lightly visible. The pearls were absent when we acquired this, so we have set the ring with fresh pearls.
Mourning or memorial jewelry was a tangible reminder of a lost loved one: a deeply personal, sentimental relic. It was one of many tools that people used to process and communicate grief as well as honor loved ones.

Domestic: In-stock items ship within three days of purchase (usually within two!) via USPS. Our default is USPS Priority Mail unless your purchase is over $1,000, in which case we require USPS Express Mail + signature confirmation. Insurance is included with all domestic purchases.
International: Default shipping is via USPS First Class International Mail unless the value of the parcel is $400 or more, in which case we default to USPS Priority Mail International shipping. Please allow 3–4 weeks for delivery. Insurance for international orders is available upon request and for an added fee.
